Hemerocallis 'Radiation Biohazard'

Daylily season is in full swing

Hemerocallis 'Ruby Spider' which is one of the prettiest red daylilies in my garden. Hurrah for daylily season.

We’ve reached my husband’s favorite time of the gardening year, and coincidentally, it always occurs right around his birthday. It is daylily season, and we are in full swing. Whenever Bill gets home from work and once we’ve had dinner, he and I walk the gardens to see the day’s blooms. I’m charmed that my big and burly husband loves these flowers so much. He’s even driving me to St. Louis so I can go to this year’s regional meeting. It’s a sweet thing to do.

Hemerocallis 'Lace Cookies' that I bought a long time ago.

My garden’s daylily show always begins with Hemerocallis ‘Lace Cookies’ (Kaskel 1998) or H. ‘Inky Fingers’ (Stamile 2001.)

Hemerocallis 'Inky Fingers' isn't my favorite because there are so few scapes on this plant. I may remove it next year.

Soon, other cultivars begin to send up scapes and buds. It’s a miracle of nature I never tire of seeing.

Oklahoma had has copious rainfall so the Central Oklahoma Hemerocallis Society’s daylily show should be awash with blooms from all over our state.

I’ve written about entering the daylily show before and what fun it is to display. Please come and visit the Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center this Saturday–tomorrow–from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. You can write down your favorites, vote on the one you love best, and get a chance to talk to people who really know how to grow and hybridize these beautiful flowers. The whole reason for the show is to educate the public on daylily care along with versatility of form, structure and style. I know it’s Father’s Day weekend, but if your father, brother, son, husband or other loved one enjoys daylilies like my husband, he won’t mind making a small detour to the show.

I hope to see you there.

H. 'San Ignacio' which is a great bloomer in my garden. I love the Stamile pinks. They have so much blue in them.

In the meantime, I wrote a post sometime ago about how to care for and feed daylilies . I also started a Google+ group devoted to daylilies if you’d like to join. I think it would be another fun place to share photos, tips and ideas.

I love Daylilies, and they like it here in Wisconsin, too. How lucky you are that your husband enjoys them, too. Have fun at the show!

Lovely, every one of them. Some of the newer cultivars are just amazing with their contrasting eye zones and ruffled petal edges.

Daylilies are so beautiful! I only have one in bloom so far. July is really when mine start to come into their own here in Massachusetts. The Daylily Bank solved the problem of the slope right in front of the house that was really hard to mow. My husband wishes it hadn't taken me years to plant it.
