Red amaryllis closeup

A bowl of blooming amaryllises and more for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day

Hello friends! For you this month, I have a bowl full of blooming amaryllises and more for Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day.

These waxed amaryllis are beautiful and impossibly easy to grow.
Waxed amaryllis from Costco in a Chippendale soup tureen.

Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day is the longest-running meme in gardening blog land.

It’s hosted on the 15th each month by my podcast co-host, Carol Michel. If you don’t know, we host a garden podcast called the Gardenangelists. Because of Carol’s heavy lifting, we are in our seventh season. An episode drops each week on Wednesdays unless you subscribe to our newsletter, and then you get the episode a whole day early.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day.
See that one little yellow flower? I’m counting these succulents in the greenhouse toward Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day.

There’s not much going on in the garden that we can see in December. Most of the action is underground. If temperatures are above 40°F, plants are growing roots. Most insects are snug in their beds, and the landscape is peaceful. It has become one of my favorite seasons.

I like the stillness and that there are fewer ticks.

Still, when I’m outside wandering the garden or working in it, I wear my clothing from Insect Shield. Last month, I sent in several items of my clothing to get them treated. This is cheaper than buying clothes. My 15% discount code is DEENASHRDR if you want to use it. It helps me too.

Thanksgiving cactus for Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day.
This light pink Thanksgiving cactus flowered a week or so ago. I rescued it from Walmart one year. Look how it’s grown.

My prettiest amaryllis so far are the waxed ones from Costco. If you’d like to see a bunch of my amaryllis from years past, here you go. I did a little reel on Instagram.

In other news, Bill is regaining his strength from back surgery. I’m also hanging in there. I am trying a new medication to hopefully dent my airborne Alpha-gal and MCAS reactions. I developed MCAS after being diagnosed with AGS. It’s an autoimmune disease where you look fine unless you’re not.

Enough of that. Here’s my Christmas tree.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
My Christmas tree for 2024. It has flowers on it so it counts.

I hope all of you are well, and that you have a very Merry Christmas.

Your amaryllis are gorgeous and I love the way you display them. Your Christmas tree is gorgeous as well. I bought an amaryllis kit with the pear moss disk. The peat moss needs water every other day. I thought it would hold water longer. Is it okay to water this often? Best wishes for the holidays and to your and Bill’s improving health.

Glad you’re in good spirits, Dee, and I hope Bill’s recovery continues well. Your plants and your home are lovely. Happy Holidays!
