Garden Blogger’s Muse Day: March

1 March, 2009 By Dee Nash

  • Garden Bloggers' Muse Day

The lake is indeed glittering, but it is cold.

The lake is indeed glittering, but it is cold.

March by William Wordsworth

“The cock is crowing,
The stream is flowing,
The small birds twitter,
The lake doth glitter,
The green field sleeps in the sun;
The oldest and youngest
Are at work with the strongest;
The cattle are grazing,
Their heads never raising;
There are forty feeding like one!

Like an army defeated
The snow hath retreated,
And now doth fare ill
On the top of the bare hill;
The Plowboy is whooping-anon-anon:
There’s joy in the mountains;
There’s life in the fountains;
Small clouds are sailing,
The rain is over and gone!

I awoke to 17 degrees F. this morning, and that is unbelievably cold even for March.  My blood was warm from the two weeks before when we had unseasonably warm weather.  Today, I hope to plant some cool crop seeds outdoors, but only if it warms up some.  Happy March everyone!  For more musing, please visit our host Carolyn Gail’s blog, Sweet Home and Garden Chicago.

    That was lovely:) Come on down to Texas and warm up, it was 83 today:)

    Hi Cheryl, now it is 83 here too. Next week in the 40s. Crazy Oklahoma weather.~~Dee

    Awww, Wordsworth!, reminding us of the perennial grumpiness of late winter and the relief and joy of spring arrived. Yes. The Universality of it all. Imagine what this must be in our collective memories. Thanks for the smile.

    Hi Kathryn, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Happy almost spring!~~Dee

    Trailing along behind again, Dee, because of this new job I have and the lack of hours in the day…when I saw that it had been 17 degrees I grew excited for you til the caffeine kicked in and I realized you were talking in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius. Oooops! Hope it’s warmed up for you by now. We’re over halfway through Farch, so it’s bound to get better…

    jodi´s last blog post..Jodi’s Gotta-Have Plants, Pt. 2: Which Witch(hazel) is Which?

    Ha, Jodi, your comment gave me a laugh. I forget you guys are Celcius. It always takes me a moment to figure it out. This week, we’re summer at 83F. Next week, we’ll be in the 40s. You just never know around here, and it confuses the poor plants.~~Deee

    Hi Dee, beautiful photo of your lake and I do like your poem for Muse Day~~the line about forty eating as one is a great visual. It’s still cold several days past you writing this and we are all ready for the thaw; I know you are, too. Have a lovely day and keep warm! gail

    It was nearly ‘sowing’ day a couple of days ago and then, the white stuff covered everything up! That’s the subject of my GBMD post. Your choice of poem is appropriate, but somehow Mother Nature was asleep at the wheel her in VA! She’s back on track now, though, so hopefully winter is in retreat mode again:)

    Dee,
    Thanks for the Wadsworth poem. We also had cold weather today here in NC it was 22 degrees and we got three inches of snow, see my blog for photos. I’ll post peas in the snow later tonight.

    Marvelous March, you never know what you will wake up to. Love the “retreating” snow line. I like to think winter is retreating too despite the cold tems this week.

    Hey Dee!

    Thanks for the recent comments on my blog. I hear ya on the cold continuing—we got about 7-8 inches of snow here in Northern Virginia last night and this morning. I just posted some photos I shot in the a.m. before the snow turns to slush with all the drivers! Pretty stuff, it is…now GO AWAY and bring on spring! 🙂

    The Wordsworth poem was beautiful; he’s one of my favs! Doesn’t the cold feel even colder when it hits you in the spring? Just last week I was in shorts and flip flops, today I have out the thermals again.

    Hi Dee, anon, anon we shall go out today as we pick up the fallen limbs from ferocious winds and see the coming of spring. It is hard to sow those early crops when the ground is frozen solid!!! But it will thaw anon, right? 🙂

    Please don’t send that level of cold into Texas, Dee. I actually think we might be done with hard freezes, plus that sounds quite unpleasant. I hope you warm up soon!

    Pam, here’s hoping I didn’t.~~Dee

    Soon! Soon! I actually feel a tinge of guilt when I see all the gardeners in the cold climates waiting patiently for spring. It will be here soon!

    Sheila´s last blog post..Birds of Paradise

    Hi Sheila, the hard part was that it was so warm here the last two weeks that everything was thawing out and growing like gangbusters. This week is supposed to be warm, and you enjoy your warm weather.~~Dee

    Well, Carol, that’s certainly unusual. Happy March to you.~~Dee
