Welcome!

I’m Dee Nash, a native Oklahoman, and I’ve gardened here since my teens. I know from personal experience how challenging our prairie climate can be.

But my blog isn’t just for Oklahomans. Gardening can be challenging in other climates too. So, I share how to garden wherever you grow.

Planting the bulbs

Planting the bulbs

Dee Nash – 23 November, 2022
This week I'm planting the bulbs in two garden spots. In keeping with ten ways to enjoy your garden more, I'm planting the bulbs where I can see them from the front door and in the garden border outside the kitchen where I write and record the Gardenangelists podcast with Carol Michel. I did an Instagram video about the one spot today explaining how I plant. I have so many bulbs to plant. In fact, I found two more boxes in my garage. Too many bulbs as usual. I have boxes and boxes of bulbs to plant. To make it easier, I'll use a l ong bulb auger for my 20v DeWalt cordless drill for planting among the trees where I've never planted before. That's where I'm placing some of the new daffodils. In November, the kitchen border is full of spent perennials. I'll need to cut some of these...

It’s time to plan for next year’s garden

It’s time to plan for next year’s garden

Dee Nash – 9 November, 2022
Yes, I know we're all exhausted from the summer from hell in Oklahoma and Texas--or is that just me? But it's time to start planning for next year's dream garden. Trust me, it's time, and who knows? Maybe next summer will be more seasonal. It was the summer before. Look how green my grass was in July 2021 when we had our open garden. Little Cedar Garden in July 2021. It's time to plant fall bulbs or order them if you haven't already. My fall bulbs are always part of planning for next year's garden, and are now arriving daily. Why, oh why, did I order so many, and why did I think I could grow camassias? I don't live in the Pacific Northwest. How I planted the bulbs in the sidewalk border last fall. I'll probably do the same this year with any tulips I get. Around Thanksgiving, I'll...

Fall vibes

Fall vibes

Dee Nash – 22 October, 2022
Fall vibes is a hashtag used all over the internet. Cozy vibes is its pumpkin-scented counterpart. I don't know why, but both of them make me laugh. Consider this my fall vibes garden edition, kinda like the various editions of Monopoly, my favorite being the discontinued garden one. This photo makes me laugh too, because I had those lavenders trimmed to the same height. One grew a lot bigger than the other. I have no idea why. They are the same variety, 'Phenomenal.' Tired after a long, hot summer? Me too. Last week, I gave a talk to the Logan County Master Gardeners, and while we set up the projector, I asked them how their summer gardens went. After a pause, we all just laughed. Summer was pretty brutal this year. We're all so sick of it that even when temperatures rose to 85° in central Oklahoma this week after...

Fall favorites

Fall favorites

Dee Nash – 15 October, 2022
October can be the most beautiful month in the garden, and that's because it is full of fall favorites. I've been doing a few Instagram videos about my fall favorites this week, and I thought I'd follow up here on the blog with some of them too. This post is also part of October's Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day hosted by Carol J. Michel. Large Super Generation Male Monarch butterfly on 'Bluebird' aster. The monarch butterfly stragglers are still here. In October, there are still a few monarchs floating by, primarily members of the Super Generation who will continue their journey to Mexico after stopping by for a drink of nectar. Here, in Oklahoma, the Super Generation is often "born" in our gardens. They are much larger and more beautiful than regular monarch butterflies because they need that wingspan to fly farther and faster. I'm still seeing one or two every...
