Welcome!
I’m Dee Nash, a native Oklahoman, and I’ve gardened here since my teens. I know from personal experience how challenging our prairie climate can be.
But my blog isn’t just for Oklahomans. Gardening can be challenging in other climates too. So, I share how to garden wherever you grow.
Enjoy the garden you’ve always wanted!

Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day December
For this month's Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, I don't have much blooming indoors, but since it's snowing, I'll share those photos too. Snow day! The walkway from the back kitchen door to the greenhouse and potager when it first started snowing. I decided I'm going to put Christmas lights on the potager this weekend after the snow melts. My four bee hives in the snow. I have all of their entrances reduced down and once the snow is gone, I'll check the sugar on them. I'm winter feeding the weak hive at the end this year. Bee hives and my little, green, she shed. My Little Cedar Garden sign is on the end of the shed. Pair of Cardinals in the snow. We've had snow twice this week! Almost unheard of in Oklahoma this early in the season. Seems we are getting all of Minnesota's snow, and this storm will turn...

Planting bulbs indoors and outside
Planting bulbs indoors and outside. That's what's happening at our Little Cedar Garden the past few weeks. That and continued storm cleanup. We removed most of the large limbs that were hanging in the trees and got the largest limbs out of the back garden and front beds. There is still a lot of debris like small twigs and leaves. Bill and I worked on that all weekend. It's part of why I haven't written. What I planted and why This view is from in front of the bed. Yes, we still are working on getting our log cabin stained. The ice storm set everyone and everything back a bit. I planted 'Amazing Parrot,' 'Blushing Impression' and 'Green Wave' tulips, Narcissus tazetta 'Silver Chimes' daffodils, Hyacinthoides hispanica 'Excelsior,' Eranthis hyemalis, winter aconite, Iris reticulata 'Clairette' and 'Harmony,' and Scilla siberica 'Spring Beauty' in the new, expanded garden bed in the...

Fall beauty remains
Although we still have limbs down in the back garden, and some still hanging in the trees, fall beauty remains. Giant branch still down in the back garden. They are working on removing this today. I always fall for fall. Just look at these photos of Hamamelis × intermedia 'Arnold Promise' and Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' in my front yard and back garden respectively. The witch-hazel sits between our front door and our bedroom. It is one of the first shrubs to bloom in spring, and Carol Michel and I talked about it on this week's Gardenangelists podcast episode Dreaming of Spring in the Fall. Hamamelis 'Arnold Promise' has such a beautiful vase shape. You should grow it.Hamamelis 'Arnold Promise' up close. H. arborescens 'Annabelle'Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' turns the most beautiful shade of yellow in fall. As for H. arborescens 'Annabelle,' she probably needs no introduction because I've written about her many...

No power, but not powerless
One week ago, Oklahoma was hit by a historically damaging ice storm. At one point, 388,000 Oklahomans were without power. Bear with me, this is a long post, but a lot of readers have been writing to me asking what's going on. Icy branches in the side yard. What I thought was a double whammy ice storm was actually a triple whammy. Three separate storm surges pummeled much of western and central Oklahoma. Driving sheets of freezing rain and sleet fell, and later, after the trees and power lines were thoroughly ice-coated, cold rain fell pulling on limbs and branches that still held crystalline leaves. Crystalline leaves of my blueberry bush. This 1-2-3 punch spelled disaster for much of the state even though it wasn't reported on the national news. On Monday evening, we finally lost power. I hope they get it fixed before Friday at 11:00 p.m., but I'm...
